Kanban kick-start example

Here is a detailed example of a fairly typical 2-tier Kanban board, for teams that know the basics of Kanban and are taking their first steps towards implementing it in practice.

Translations:

It is sort of like a code example, or a condensed Kanban patterns repository. Print it out and use it as a source of ideas & inspiration as you evolve your own board.

If you know Scrum but are new to Kanban you might want to read Kanban vs Scrum first.

  1. Great example about how to implement Kanban for Maintenance and support project. Thank you very much and I will keep following your excellent blog.

  2. I like the example but it’s way too complex as a kick-start. I believe people should start with something very simple. Many of add-ons like bugs connected with task, another small “stamp” showing bug status etc will emerge as team works with Kanban. Adding them up-front makes the Kanban implementation complex and more difficult than it would be otherwise.

  3. Good point. I’m hoping teams will start simple and evolve rather than just copy everything on the board. But once they do discover that they need, for example, a distinction between features and tasks then this board can give them ideas about how to do it in practice, and thereby speed up the evolution.

See this board as a condensed Kanban pattern repository rather than a template.

I’m thinking of maybe adding an animated version showing how a board like this typically would evolve from scratch.

  4. Feel free to copy the ideas from the board. Most of the ideas weren’t invented by me anyway. I wanted to show them because I noticed that different teams were independently evolving towards similar solutions, which indicates a reusable pattern.

  5. hi – is there any tool that you know off, that will allow capture of all the 1000s of user requests that are received (most via email) into a simple comparative chart. like MASS to simple. and then I can group and create the feature cards?

ive been using csv to import excel
but there must be a better way by now…

    many thanks

  6. Hi Henrik,

I’m going to give a talk about Lean & the use of Kanaban board during Software Development, I’d like to use your Kanban board as an example of what is being used in Software development .. so, I’m seeking your permission to use it. (Citation & reference will be made as appropriate).

I read two of your semi-books, Scrum and XP … Scrum and Kanaban .. I may use some text from them as well!

  8. Dear Mr. Kniberg,
Our company, BusinessTech, is developing “A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Lean Six Sigma” web site for Dr. Suren Dwivedi of the College of Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This site is for educational purposes only, and may be used as course material for both our university and for any other university or company which chooses to do so. The website will be located at http://www.surendrandwivedi.com. .

We ask your permission to use your graphic kanban-example.jpg (really nice, by the way) in a webpage on our site and for us to provide a link back to your site in our credits. This will give your site more exposure to upcoming engineers while giving students a chance to see how the material is being used outside the educational environment.

If you wish to deny us permission, please contact us promptly at lethe9@gmail.com, and we will immediately comply with your wishes. Thank you for your assistance.

    Sincerely,

  9. This example is awesome, I’ll implement in my process in order to get more visual control of all tasks involved

    Thanks a lot!!

  10. I like the way you show user stories and their tasks on the same board. This would be great for maintenance and support projects (as mentioned earlier) plus small development projects. In other words, where user stories result in just a few tasks. I’m sure it would work in bigger projects as well but its the smaller stuff where I can see immediate benefits in a short space of time.

    1. I wanted to know if I could use your awesome Kanban kick-start example in my presentation on building a Kanban. I am not getting paid for doing the presentation. I am presenting at meetups as way of giving back to the Agile community. Underneath your graphic I will include the following Source: Courtesy of Crisp’s Blog from the Crisp Consultants.

      Please advise.
